Dappling in music on Linux?

I would want to dapple in music but my efforts today were not very fruitful and resulted mostly in crashing applications and people telling me I need a real-time kernel. As the result I found myself pondering booting into Microsoft Windows in order to try that there. It was the first time for ages I wanted MS Win for something else than games. Certainty there must be something I can do on Linux to find out if I want to try dabbling in music more? Currently it feels Linux is less suited for making music than Commodore 64 was, and that cannot be, right?

YouTube video by LoneStar does a great job explaining the song American Pie. Before this the song seemed to have very weird lyrics. Now they make more sense.

Using Amarok as a podcatcher

I found a way to use Amarok that fits my criteria for a usable podcatcher. Maybe someday I’ll maka a plugin that removes some of these steps, but here is what I do currently:

I only move podcasts to my portable player with Amarok. That way I can easily get them all to be under ‘podcasts’ directory without having to meddle with the path of each individual podcast.

1. Choose Transfer to Media player from the context menu of the episode.

2. Choose Mark to Listened from the context menu of the episode. Now you can tell which ones are in your transfer queue.

3. When done with your selections, attach your device, go to Devices tab and choose Transfer. For this method to work, you should transfer all of your queue.

4. Enjoy the podcasts on your device.

5. Next time when you work through your podcasts in order to choose the ones to Transfer to Media Player, choose Delete Downloaded Podcast from the context menu of those episodes the way you marked them in step 2. As you go through them in order, you can be sure that the ones below you have been transferred and that the ones above you are what you just marked for transfer.

I subscribed to Last.fm for 2 months. If you want to dive into the music I love, here you go. Unfortunately last.fm has been quite choppy lately. I hope it gets better.

Music playback improvements

I might like a music system that recognises my voice and turns down the playback volume when I speak. After a bit of silence it could turn it up again.

Also, with music podcasts I would sometime want the system to skip the parts where the hosts just talk. Unfortunately some of the music I like contains talk too. I wonder if such system would get confused.

Looking for Open Source music with Stepmania steps

Do you have a band? Would you be willing to make some of your music free (as in Free Software or Open Source)? Could you make Stepmania steps for some of that music? I'd be very grateful.

The thing is, Stepmania is not yet in Debian because there is no game files for it. I'd love to package it but I'm not good at making steps nor a musician.

Shure E2c not that good for freezing temperatures

I really like my Shure E2c earphones for their sound quality and comfort but unfortunately they have cables that stiffen in freezing temperatures, making it harder to put them on or to remove. Once the cable even cracked, exposing the copper wire inside. I managed to fix that with liquid rubber but one still needs to be extra careful in cold temperatures to prevent damage to the cables.

Allergic to Mirwais

I seem to be allergic to Mirwais. I like what the songs sound like but I get a feeling of an imminent nosebleed.
